Workshop Expansion

workshop-new-machines-and-chimney-2-1024x781 - Workshop Expansion
We have spent the week fitting in our two new large laser cutters! One is named Fiona and one Andy, both are monsters! It has taken 4 weeks plus to get them installed, the blade beds never came so all this week I have been making custom blade beds, fitting the new large bore 150 mm extraction chimney (Mrs. Pop UP footed the ladder!). Lots of work…. but now I hope we can produce many more wooden gift cards quickly for our charity aims.
Hard to express the effort involved in doubling the workshop size, building foundations, walls, roof, electrics, fitting out inside the shelves and arch etc, purchasing new desks, laptops to drive machines, making the access paths easier to get the machines in, installation, buying new quiet fans, visiting the dump with rubbish and now finally making the custom blade beds!! When we started 3 years ago I thought 100 cards a week would be enough to make some reasonable funds for charity. Now we can easily do 100 an hour. We are decommissioning one machine, the first little benchtop “named China 1” It has done it’s service and is now moving to my neighbour next door! Massive thanks to all those who have helped in the process of expansion.
1. Foundations James Mckenzie and Martin

7. Fitting and help around Mr. Gabrielle Pretto, Mrs Pop UP and neighbour Terry.

Birdies birdies and birdies!

Lots has been happening in Pop UP world with the design of many bird related products.  We have been very pleased to be working with the design team at “i like birds” to develop some products for marketing and possibly for sale nationwide.  Inspiration came from designing a few larger products that could have pop up cards attached,  so lamp shades, birdie trees and bird boxes were added to the list with a lovely new way of getting a double sided bird ( well a principle we had used before in the Hap-Bee Birdie Card).  So a new design of Wren, Blue tit were created to add to  the lamp shades, bird boxes and birdie trees.  The challenges are in the packing as they all our much bigger to post and to fit into standard sized postable boxes for delivery at a sensible price.  We are excited about these products and will probably display the range at the launch in 2019 at the Scottish Gift Trade Show.  The i like birds products are being offered as prizes and gifts at the Harrogate Trade Show in July 2018 on the mygifttrade exhibition stand.  All very exciting for a birdacious future!

Pop UPs contributing to Albania Adopt-A-Child Dentistry and Medical Work.

This month we are pleased to be contributing towards the wonderful work of Adopt-A-Child in Albania, they are going to use the money to help with the dentistry and medical work on the Children they look after! Fabulous. The photo is from their recent visit of the national director of the dentistry facility they have funded as set up in Kotodesh. We hope to contribute towards this for the next couple of months. I quote what was written to me.
“Dental: I met the dentist, Evis, who currently works in our purpose-build clinic in Kotodesh one day a week (she has her own dental practice in Pogradec). This clinic was built by a volunteer work party from Inverness and furnished/equipped using money raised by our Charity Shop in Markethill, Northern Ireland. She would like to develop her work, taking a portable clinic to the other programmes as she has done in the past. It currently costs $1000 per year for her dental supplies and a further $1000 for equipment. Please see attached photo of Evis treating a boy with toothache who arrived while we were visiting the clinic.

Medical: Each village has its own doctor. Appointments are free, but the prescriptions are not. When funds allow, we can pay for the medication the children need but can’t afford. We are also planning to restart visiting medical teams from the UK & Ireland who would go to Albania for a week/fortnight and work under the supervision of the local Albanian doctor. All medication would be provided free of charge and the local doctor would then follow up on the patients seen after the visiting team leaves.

It is wonderful to think that Pop Up cards are starting to make a difference in some lives!!

Thanks to the lovely work of our colleague Mr. Gabrielle Pretto we have been putting a few video clips up on our website (www.facebook.com/popupdesignscards/)  showing the workshop in use and a few of the 1000 card designs we now have.  He has also set up a new Amazon shophttps://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/page/B74E7F6F-496A-4E03-A65E-F74242C0ADDF?ingress=3&visitId=0889c137-f8fd-4650-8ee4-00256b0e29db for us with some products at a cheaper price.  Thrilled with his work and hopefully together we can raise even more for our charity causes of compassionUK and Adopt-A-Child sponsorship programmes.
